WHAT TO SUBMIT

We would be happy to consider for publication anything that you have written, including fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs, in-depth interviews, travel narratives, translations into English of signed and written works in other languages, and creative ways of blurring the lines between signing and written words. We are also open to including high-resolution art photography as well as photographs of paintings and other artworks you've made for possible use on our book covers.

In other words, we are open to anything of a high quality. We are planning to put together a new anthology of Deaf and signing writers for sometime in 2008. We will be putting out a call for submissions later in the fall of 2007.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Both text and visual arts submissions must be sent by email only.  (We will not consider submissions sent by snail mail.)

In the body of your email message, please include a cover letter containing a short biography of up to one hundred words.

Text submissions
Your piece or pieces should be in a single Word document or rich text file attachment.  No fancy fonts, please.  Everything must be single-spaced. Again, if you wish to submit several pieces at once, they must be put together in ONE document for ONE attachment. The email address for text submissions is below.

Visual arts submissions
Low-resolution photographs of your art photographs as well as of paintings and other artworks are fine for consideration. If we choose to use a photograph of yours, we will contact you for a high-resolution photograph so that your work will look really good in print. The email address for visual arts submissions is below.

COPYRIGHT AND COMPENSATION

We hope to respond to each submission within two months.  Writers retain the copyright to their work, but we ask that you let us know if anything that you are submitting has been previously published.

While we cannot offer financial compensation for publishing your work in our new anthology in the foreseeable future, it is our hope that you will see the value of having your work made directly available to those most appreciative of creative expressions about the Deaf and signing experience. The more you help promote Handtype Press among your friends and family, the more people will read your work; the more people who know who you are from your work, the better your future projects can sell.

OKAY, BUT WHAT ABOUT MY BOOK?

While Handtype Press plans to publish a few titles over time, it is our goal to spend more time per book to ensure its quality and success as well as the company's long-term viability. Therefore, we will not consider projects from anyone until they can get a piece published in our new anthology first.

It would also help us a great deal if you ordered a book or two from us. Such purchases will enable us to support other projects such as the future publication of your book. Passion for the best in Deaf and signing literature alone isn't enough for Handtype Press to survive; we need financial sustenance. Like it or not, money does talk.

Thank you for supporting Handtype Press with your purchase!
